ANNA DHANAM /FOOD CHARITY

The type of plate used for Anna Dhana (Annadanam / Food Charity) depends entirely on whether it is a small ritual offering or a mass feeding event.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

1. Mass Feedings & Temple Devotional Events (Large Scale)
For public mass charity feedings at temples, community halls, or ashrams, disposable and eco-friendly plates are used to handle heavy crowds efficiently:
  • Pattal / Leaf Plates: Traditional leaf plates (pattal)
made from dried Sal leaves, Banyan leaves, or flame-of-the-forest (Palash) leaves stitched together.

  • Areca Leaf Plates: Sturdy, biodegradable Areca palm leaf plates are widely preferred for temple Annadanam because they are chemical-free and sustainable.
  • Fresh Banana Leaves: Exceptionally common in South Indian temples and traditions, fresh banana leaves
act as the sacred, natural platter for the food.
  • Paper Plates & Donas: Budget-friendly silver-laminated paper plates
or paper cups (donas) are used for quick servings of Prasad like halwa, khichdi, or sweet rice.
2. Temple Offerings & Ritual Bhog (Small Scale)
If you are preparing a small food offering (Bhog or Naivedyam) for the deity inside a temple or home altar before distributing it:
  • Brass or Copper Plates: Traditional metal Brass Pooja Thalis
or copper plates are used to offer food cleanly to God.
  • Kansa (Bell Metal): An ancient Ayurvedic metal choice, Kansa plates
are used for premium temple rituals and offering sacred food.
  • Silver Plates: Often used in wealthier temple rituals or for specialized family ceremonies like a baby's first rice-eating ceremony (Annaprashan

3. Institutional or Regular Ashrams
  • Stainless Steel Compartment Plates: For places that serve daily free meals to hundreds (like the Golden Temple or large Ashrams), heavy-duty stainless steel partition thalis are used because they are endlessly reusable, sterile, and easy to wash.
