EARTH'S ROTATION AND DIRECTION

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

The Earth rotates eastward (in a prograde direction), spinning counterclockwise when viewed from directly above the North Pole.
Direction of Rotation
  • From West to East: Because the Earth spins from west to east, the Sun, Moon, and stars appear to rise in the east and set in the west.
  • Axis: It spins around an imaginary axis running through the North and South Poles, tilted at about 23.4 degrees.
Speed of Rotation
The time it takes to complete one full spin is 24 hours (specifically, about 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds relative to distant stars). However, the actual surface speed depends on your latitude: [
At the Equator: The Earth moves the fastest, spinning at approximately 1,674 km/h (1,037 mph).
  • At Mid-Latitudes (e.g., 45°): The speed drops to about 1,180 km/h (733 mph).
  • At the Poles: The rotational speed drops to 0 km/h (effectively zero), as you simply spin in place on the axis.

What is the Coriolis Effect?
The Coriolis effect is the apparent deflection of moving objects (like air, water, or long-range projectiles) when they are viewed from a rotating reference frame like the Earth. It is not a physical push or pull ("real" force), but a geometric result of the Earth spinning beneath things that are traveling across long distances.
  • How It Works: Because the Earth is wider at the equator, the ground there spins much faster (~1,000 mph / 1,600 km/h) than near the poles (~0 mph). When an object or air mass moves toward a different latitude, it keeps its original side-to-side momentum, making it look like it curves.
  • Direction of Bending:
    • In the Northern Hemisphere, moving objects and wind deflect to the right (causing storms and hurricanes to spin counterclockwise).
    • In the Southern Hemisphere, moving objects and wind deflect to the left (causing storms and hurricanes to spin clockwise).
  • Scale Matters: The Coriolis effect only builds up over long distances and extended time periods (like global wind belts, jet streams, or hurricanes). It does not control small, everyday things like the way water drains in a toilet or a bathtub. Learn more via National Geographic EducatioN
